What is Aircraft Maintenance Engineering (AME)?
Response: -All aircraft operated by Indian airlines and registered in India are required to be maintained to the highest standards as laid down by the Director General of Civil Aviation. The Director General of Civil Aviation is part of the Govt. of India, Ministry of Civil Aviation, and is responsible for ensuring all aspects of safety in aircraft operations in India.
An aircraft maintenance engineer (AME) keeps aircraft in working order through maintenance, repairs and inspections they are responsible for ensuring an aircraft operates properly and safely. A maintenance engineer may make repairs, troubleshoot problems, conduct inspections and make upgrades to aircrafts. Daily duties may include keeping records of and performing scheduled maintenance, making emergency repairs.
What is the minimum qualification required to get admission in this course?
Ans:– All students who have passed their Class XII examination with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics from a recognized board or university or its equivalent with a minimum aggregate of 45% in Class XII are eligible to apply for SAME’s three-year program. All students who have appeared for the Class XII examination and whose results are not available by July will be considered as provisionally eligible subject to their having obtained 60% marks in their Class X examination and subject to their obtaining minimum 45% marks in aggregate in the Class XII examination with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.
In order to be eligible the student must also be generally medically-fit and should not suffer from color blindness and/or night blindness.
Foreign students need to obtain security clearance through DGCA for admission to the course.
What are the branches/ streams of AME course?
SAME is offering AME course in two streams:
a) Mechanical stream trains students to obtain an Aircraft Maintenance Engineer’s (AME) license with respect to maintaining an aircraft’s Airframe and Engine/s.
Mechanical stream (Aeroplane and Power plants) – comprising of Light Aeroplane (LA), Heavy Aeroplane (HA), Piston Engine (PE), Jet Engine (JE).
b) The Avionics stream trains students to obtain an Aircraft Maintenance Engineer’s (AME) license with respect to maintaining an aircraft’s Electrical System, Instrument System and Radio Navigation System.
Avionics stream – comprising of Electrical System (ES), Instrument System (IS) and Radio Navigation System (RN).
What is DGCA and what is the role of DGCA in getting AME License?
Response: – Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) is the regulatory body governing the safety aspects of civil aviation in India. DGCA is the appellate authority who issue the license to be an Aircraft Maintenance Engineer in India.
The AME plays a vital role in the aviation industry to ensure that aircrafts are maintained to the highest standards and as laid down by the DGCA. In the course of their duties AME’s are responsible for servicing and maintenance of the aircraft which includes repairs, replacements, overhaul and inspection of the aircraft, aircraft components and other related items of equipment.
An AME is the key person in-charge of the fitness or the health of an aircraft. Each flight has to go through a Daily Inspection (DI) before it is allowed to take off. Routine inspections are done on strict periodic intervals depending upon the hours of flight. No aircraft can take off without a Certificate Release to Service (CRS) issued from an AME.
How is the AME course curriculum designed?
Response: AME course consists of total six semesters each of six months for theory and practical in equal proportion. The syllabi are primarily differentiated in Mechanical and Avionics streams and broadly undertake the following:

Mechanical stream (Helicopter and Power plants)-Rotary Wing Aircraft (RA) Piston Engine (PE) and Jet Engine (JE)

The sixth semester before the BAMEEC certificate focuses on training on the aircrafts. This is usually provided on aircrafts. We will provide you the training on HS 125-700.
What are the salient features of the Aircraft Maintenance Engineer (AME) course?
Response: – The AME training courses are designed to give students a comprehensive knowledge of the aircrafts, their systems and good maintenance practices to equip the students to become skilled and competent aircraft maintenance professionals. The syllabus covers knowledge of Indian Aircraft Rules, Civil Aviation Requirements, theoretical and practical training, technical knowledge of design, construction, maintenance and operation of aircraft, engines, systems and aircraft materials used in the construction of airframes, engines and accessories; knowledge of engineering practices and skill in the use of various equipment; knowledge of good maintenance practices, human factors and human performance, necessary judgment and competence required to assess the airworthiness of aircraft and its equipment etc.
Future prospects of Aviation industry in India.
Response: – Aviation industry (also aviation sector) refers to the industries and organizations, engaged in the various aspects of aviation, such as airlines manufacturing, airlines flying, operating, maintenance, ground-handling, training centers, airports and regulatory bodies. India’s civil aviation industry is on a high-growth trajectory. India aims to become the third-largest aviation market by 2026.
The domestic aviation sector is projected to employ nearly four million people in two decades, driven by improved economic activities and labor productivity, says a study instituted by the Civil Aviation Ministry. Their estimate indicates that by 2035, the Indian civil aviation sector (across the study segments of airport, airlines, cargo, MRO (Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul) and ground handling) will employ 0.8 to 1 million personnel directly and another 3 million indirectly.
What are the job prospects for AMEs?
Response: – On passing out from SAME, a student may consider several career options to join an airline, an aviation related IT organization or an MRO as an assistant, Technician, Junior Trainee/Engineer. SAME is part of the InterGlobe Group, which is also the promoter of India’s largest airline “IndiGo”. SAME students may be considered for employment with the InterGlobe Group of companies, subject to the requirement of these companies and provided the students meet the selection criteria and recruitment standards of such companies.

Difference between AME & other courses like Aeronautical/ Aeronautics Engineering?
Aircraft Maintenance engineering course is a specialize training program for maintenance and certification of aircraft for safe flight, this is a Licensing program like pilots and the license will be issued by DGCA, Govt. of India. Only License holder AMEs can maintain and certify the aircraft before each flight, that’s why license is mandatory to become an AME.
